DOE Unveils Draft Carbon Management Strategy And Seeks Stakeholder Input - Carbon Herald

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has published a working version of its Carbon Management Strategy, designed to instruct the rollout of carbon capture, removal and utilization technologies.

The strategy is structured as a step by step roadmap between until 2030 and focuses on the solutions that can help achieve broader net zero emission targets outlined by the current administration. It outlines five strategic components that stakeholders can contribute their opinions to:

  • R&D – a focus on research, development, demonstration, and deployment funding
  • Transportation and storag – building out CO2 transportation and storage capacity and infrastructure
  • Policy – creation and implementation of evidence-driven policies and regulations across federal agencies
  • Community engagement – working with both communities and workers to manage potential health and environmental risks in a responsible way
  • Diplomacy – support work on an international level to advance carbon management with partner countries in line with the Paris Agreement.

By achieving clarity and consensus on how to progress on all five priorities, the strategy will inform the DOE’s next steps targeting the scale up of carbon management, while simultaneously assisting stakeholders in engaging with the Department for their specific needs.

Comments can be sent directly to carbonmanagementstrategy@hq.doe.gov by December 10, 2024 with the DOE specifying that they are looking for feedback on the entire report as the final vision for the strategy is still being developed.
