Technip Energies and LanzaTech Global have been awarded a significant grant from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to advance their groundbreaking carbon recycling technology.
The DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) has committed up to $200 million in federal funding to support the “Sustainable Ethylene from CO2 Utilization with Renewable Energy Project” (SECURE), a joint venture aimed at transforming captured carbon dioxide into valuable ethylene.
Project SECURE will integrate LanzaTech’s innovative carbon recycling technology into existing ethylene production facilities.
This revolutionary process leverages captured CO2 and renewable hydrogen to produce sustainable ethanol and ethylene, offering a promising pathway towards decarbonizing the petrochemical industry.
The initial focus will be on implementing this technology in the US Gulf Coast region, where it can be seamlessly integrated into existing commercial ethylene crackers.
LanzaTech’s technology, which has previously received support from the DOE, offers a versatile solution for various industries. By capturing and recycling carbon emissions, companies across diverse sectors can transform waste into valuable products, reducing their environmental impact and creating new revenue streams.

The DOE’s funding will support the design, engineering, construction, and equipment procurement for a commercial-scale integrated technology unit. Both Technip and LanzaTech expressed their enthusiasm to be working together.
“The global population is expected to continue to rise by 2050, bringing with it a greater demand for consumer goods that rely on ethylene. While addressing this growing demand, we absolutely need to decarbonize ethylene production,” Arnaud Pieton, CEO at Technip Energies, added.
Dr. Jennifer Holmgren, Chair and CEO of LanzaTech said: “Ethylene is a key building block for thousands of chemicals and materials, and is often referred to as the world’s most important chemical. Our project not only increases the efficiency and value of existing ethylene production infrastructure, but also creates high-quality jobs and supports local communities.”
