DOE Invests $44.5M In Carbon Capture, Transport And Storage Projects

DOE Invests $52.5M To Boost Commercialization Of Direct Air Capture Technology - Carbon Herald

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded $44.5 million in funding to support research and development of carbon capture, transport, and storage technologies.

The initiative aims to accelerate the commercialization of CCS by focusing on specific geographic regions with high potential for carbon dioxide storage.

Nine research teams, including universities, research institutions, and private companies, will collaborate on projects to enhance understanding of geological formations suitable for carbon sequestration.

Additionally, they will develop strategies to engage with communities, reduce project costs, and streamline regulatory processes.

By investing in these regional partnerships, the DOE seeks to create a robust CCS infrastructure that can significantly reduce carbon emissions from industrial facilities and power plants across the United States.

The selected projects will play a crucial role in advancing CCS technology and making it a viable solution to climate change; they include:

  • Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio;
  • Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University in Stanford, Calif.;
  • Carbon Solutions LLC in Okemos, Mich.;
  • Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas;
  • University of North Dakota Energy & Environmental Research Center in Grand Forks, ND;
  • The University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas;
  • The University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah;
  • University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wy.;
  • Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Project applicants were required to outline specific plans for benefiting local communities as part of their proposals.

These plans emphasized creating high-quality jobs, promoting diversity and inclusion, and supporting disadvantaged communities in alignment with the Biden administration’s Justice40 Initiative.

The selected projects will be overseen by the Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).
