The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has extended the deadline for its Carbon Dioxide Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation (CIFIA) program, which offers $500 million in funding for projects across the United States.
The new deadline for applications is October 30, with selection notifications projected for December, the DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) said on Wednesday.
Award negotiations are expected to take place between December 2024 and April 2025.
This funding opportunity, enabled by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aims to support carbon dioxide (CO2) transport for storage or conversion to useful products.
Meeting the Biden-Harris Administration’s net-zero emissions target by mid-century requires deploying technologies that capture CO2 from industrial processes and power generation, as well as directly from the atmosphere.

Expanding CO2 transport infrastructure is a crucial part of achieving this goal, ensuring safe and efficient transportation of captured CO2 to storage or conversion facilities, FECM said.
The “Future Growth Grants” under the CIFIA program will provide financial assistance for the design, development, and construction of CO2 transport capacity.
This infrastructure will support current and future carbon capture and direct air capture (DAC) facilities, as well as additional CO2 storage and conversion sites.
The DOE expects to award between $31.25 million and $125 million per project, with a required 20% cost share from awardees.
