Carbon Ridge has achieved a major milestone in maritime decarbonization after an independent assessment by classification society DNV confirmed its centrifugal onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) system reached peak carbon dioxide (CO2) capture rates of 98% during a commercial vessel pilot.

The verification was conducted under DNV’s Recommended Practice for performance verification of onboard carbon capture systems and marks the first maritime deployment of a centrifugal OCCS technology.

The pilot was carried out aboard the STI Spiga, a 109,999 dwt LR2 product tanker owned by Scorpio Tankers. Installed during a scheduled drydock at Besiktas Shipyard in Türkiye in July 2025, the system operated over a five-month period while the vessel remained in regular commercial service.

According to DNV’s assessment, the system achieved peak CO2 capture rates exceeding 98%, with more than half of all recorded observations falling within an 86-98% capture range. DNV reviewed and validated the testing methodologies, calculations and performance data before confirming the results.

Independent Validation Supports Commercial Deployment

Carbon Ridge CEO and Founder Chase Dwyer said the results demonstrate the company’s ability to significantly reduce vessel emissions through its modular centrifugal capture technology.

“The initial data and learnings from the STI Spiga trial further underpin our ambitions to scale Carbon Ridge’s OCCS across the global fleet,” he noted.

DNV’s Head of Onboard Carbon Capture, Chara Georgopoulou, said independently verified capture rates are essential for establishing commercially viable business models for OCCS technologies. She added that standardized performance verification will help improve transparency and accelerate adoption across the maritime sector.

Scorpio Tankers Chief Operating Officer Cameron Mackey said the verified results reinforce the potential of onboard carbon capture as a practical compliance and decarbonization solution for shipowners facing increasingly stringent carbon regulations.

“Their system is both straightforward to install and places a low operational burden on the crew,” he said.

The project represents a significant milestone for the maritime carbon capture sector, positioning Carbon Ridge as the first company to successfully deploy and validate a centrifugal onboard carbon capture system under real-world commercial operating conditions.
