Denmark has launched its fourth tender round, inviting companies to apply for permits to explore and utilize subsurface areas for carbon dioxide (CO2) storage in three coastal regions.

The tender encompasses three designated areas – Jammerbugt, Lisa, and Inez – identified by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) as prime locations for underground CO2 storage due to their favorable geological conditions.

A comprehensive strategic environmental assessment has already been conducted for these areas to ensure environmentally sound storage operations. Applications for permits must be submitted by March 6, 2025.

To provide further guidance, the Danish Energy Agency will host a virtual information meeting on January 15th from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

This session will outline the application process and permit requirements for CO2 storage exploration and utilization.

This marks the fourth tender round for CO2 storage permits in Denmark. In February 2023, the Minister of Climate, Energy, and Utilities granted three exploration permits for offshore CO2 storage, followed by three more for onshore storage in June 2024.

A new bidding round for the previously tendered Thorning area was initiated in September 2024, with bids currently under evaluation. Furthermore, INEOS E&P and Wintershall Dea secured a permit for the Greensand Pilot Injection Project in late 2022.

Subsequently, in February 2023, these partners received the first full-scale CO2 storage permit for the Danish North Sea.

Denmark achieved a global milestone on March 8, 2023, with the successful injection of CO2 into the North Sea as part of this pioneering project.
