The North and South Europe branch of global audit, tax, and consulting company Deloitte has invested in high-integrity soil carbon removal credits from Earthshot Prize winner Boomitra.

This week, the two companies announced a partnership under which Boomitra is to deliver more than 18,000 high-quality soil carbon removal credits to Deloitte NSE, generated from its Northern Mexico Grassland Restoration Project.

For Deloitte NSE, this carbon dioxide removal (CDR) purchase aligns with the company’s strategy for reaching net-zero by 2040, which also includes active emissions reductions.

Deloitte NSE’s Sustainability & Climate practitioners have been supporting the Earthshot Prize Council with independent assessments of thousands of nominations received each year since the global environmental award was established back in 2020 by HRH Prince William.

The Earthshot Prize is what initially connected Deloitte NSE and Boomitra, when the soil CDR company was selected as the winner in the “Fix Our Climate” Earthshot category in 2023.

Aadith Moorthy, founder and CEO of Boomitra, stated, “The Earthshot Prize didn’t just award our innovation – it connected us with organizations who share our commitment to regeneration, supporting local communities, and real climate impact.”

He added, “From independently vetting Earthshot nominations to now purchasing credits from an Earthshot winner, Deloitte NSE’s leadership in climate action is accelerating producer-led carbon removal and ecosystem restoration.”

Boomitra’s Northern Mexico Grassland Restoration Project supports a network of 158 ranchers in the Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts in adopting Improved Grassland Management (IGM) practices like rotational grazing and water conservation to reverse desertification and restore local ecosystems, while boosting the soil carbon capacity.

These activities improve the productivity of the land and bring significant economic benefits for the local people, as the majority of revenue generated from carbon credit sales goes back to the ranchers and their communities.

The project is verified under Verra’s latest soil carbon methodology (VM0042), and Deloitte NSE, as well as Climate Impact Partners both perform independent due-diligence and assessments to validate the quality and integrity of Boomitra’s approach.

Sheri Hickok, CEO, Climate Impact Partners., commented, “Deloitte NSE is setting a powerful example of how companies can go beyond their value chains to support credible, community-led climate solutions. It’s a compelling demonstration of how high-integrity carbon removals can accelerate progress to net zero, whilst creating meaningful benefits for people and nature.”
