This week, the Carbon Technology Research Foundation (CTRF) announced that it has appointed Maria-Krystyna Duval as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Duval takes this position after having served as the Chief Programs & Impact Officer at the ClientEarth environmental law charity, where she was in charge of the organization’s litigation and advocacy work.

In her new role as CEO of CTRF, Duval will take the lead on forming partnerships with academic institutions, public sector entities, and philanthropic bodies and donors to advance the CTRF’s mission of addressing climate change at scale and with pace.

The CTRF is a philanthropic non-profit dedicated to accelerating the scientific research and development of nature-based decarbonization solutions that have the potential to scale to gigaton levels.

As part of its activities, the organization prioritizes initiatives that deliver a range of co-benefits, like improving food security, reducing land use footprints for crops, and introducing new income sources for communities.

In line with this vision, new CEO Maria-Krystyna Duval will leverage her vast experience and know-how in policy development and regulation to ease the implementation of scientific innovations in nature-based carbon removal in the real world through a network of supportive policies.

Commenting on her appointment, Duval shared, “The pace of scientific discovery that CTRF is helping to drive is inspiring, but unless we also think early about regulation, funding, incentives, and public trust, we risk a delay to implementation and speed of impact.”

“That’s why I’m bringing my background in law, economic policy development, and impact-led leadership to help CTRF not only back brilliant science but also shape the conditions that will allow it to thrive.”

“Investing in natural carbon removal research is not optional—it is essential, and I believe the most promising route we have to discover solutions that could really deliver the prize of net-negative emissions within a generation.”
