CREW Carbon has successfully delivered the first-ever carbon removal credits from wastewater alkalinity enhancement (WAE).
The pioneering credits are certified by carbon registry Isometric, in alignment with its recently released Wastewater Alkalinity Enhancement Protocol.
This methodology outlines rigorous scientific steps that ensure every issued WAE credit represents one tonne of carbon dioxide permanently removed from the atmosphere.
The groundbreaking credit delivery marks the first batch fulfilled by CREW Carbon as part of its $32.1 million offtake agreement with Frontier for a total of 71,878-tonnes of CDR set to be delivered between 2025 and 2030.
In this initial step of the deal, CREW Carbon issued 104.4 credits that came from the company’s WAE operations in New Haven, Connecticut.
Set to soon become one of the biggest carbon removal projects on the US East Coast, CREW Carbon’s system is integrated into the East Shore Water Pollution Abatement Facility, where it will work to remove thousands of atmospheric CO2 in 2025.
CREW Carbon’s WAE technology adds finely crushed, soluble alkaline materials like limestone to the wastewater treatment process, converting carbon dioxide released in the process into stable bicarbonate ions that will eventually make their way to the ocean, where they will remain safely stored for thousands of years without being released back into the atmosphere.
Having designed an optimized project development process, CREW Carbon is able to take wastewater treatment plants from the initial assessment stage to full WAE deployment in only three months.

The company points out that by leveraging existing infrastructure and permits, while utilizing an abundant and low-cost mineral like limestone, WAE presents a highly scalable and measurable CDR solution that has the potential to be implemented in a vast network of wastewater treatment facilities worldwide.
Dr. Joachim Katchinoff, CREW Carbon Co-Founder and CEO, stated, “CREW’s Wastewater Alkalinity Enhancement integrates into existing infrastructure to transform everyday facilities into climate assets—delivering durable, measurable carbon removal while improving treatment efficiency, lowering costs, and helping operators protect the local environment. This delivery proves that carbon removal is already happening at scale.”
