Cool Planet Technologies has officially inaugurated its 10,000-ton-per-annum carbon capture demonstration plant at Holcim ’s Höver cement facility in Lower Saxony, Germany.
The opening ceremony was led by Lower Saxony’s Minister-President Olaf Lies and Stephan Hinrichs, CEO of Holcim Germany.
The facility is currently undergoing commissioning and will capture up to 10,000 tons of CO2 annually once operational, positioning Höver among the first industrial sites in Germany to execute carbon capture at this scale.
The project is designed as a scalable blueprint for decarbonizing energy-intensive manufacturing in Germany while preserving local industrial competitiveness and employment.
Lower Saxony Minister-President Olaf Lies praised the deployment as a critical step toward the state’s climate-neutrality goals, highlighting how retrofit technologies can support heavy industry transitions.
Advanced Membrane Technology Offers Retrofit Route For Cement Decarbonization
The demonstration facility utilizes Cool Planet’s proprietary membrane carbon capture system to separate CO2 from raw kiln flue gases.
Because the system installs downstream from primary manufacturing operations, existing cement plants can be retrofitted without requiring structural alterations or process disruptions to host facilities.
Following a planned final expansion phase, the system is projected to capture approximately 90% of CO2 emissions from the Höver plant, purifying the gas for reuse in industrial applications and commercial supply chains.

Andrew Corner, CEO of Cool Planet Technologies, stated that testing the membrane-based capture system at the Höver facility establishes a foundation for gradually decarbonizing traditional cement manufacturing across Europe.
“We are relying on leading European technology and drawing on the engineering expertise of our technology partners,” added Holcim Germany CEO Stephan Hinrichs.
“Together in Lower Saxony, we are proving that climate protection and industrial competitiveness can go hand in hand.”
