Coastal Bend LNG And Solvanic Launch Carbon Capture FEED Study - Carbon Herald

Coastal Bend LNG has partnered with Solvanic to begin a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study for applying electrochemically mediated amine regeneration (EMAR) carbon capture technology at its planned liquefaction and export terminal on the Texas Gulf Coast.

The EMAR process, first developed by Professor T. Alan Hatton’s team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), replaces the high-temperature steam typically needed in amine-based carbon capture with an electrochemical method powered by electricity. 

The approach significantly lowers energy requirements and capital costs, while offering greater flexibility across scales and operating conditions.

After more than a decade of research at MIT, recent breakthroughs by Dr. Michael Massen-Hane and Dr. Michael Nitzsche paved the way for EMAR’s commercial potential. 

Both researchers went on to co-found Solvanic, which has since secured an option agreement to deploy the technology at Coastal Bend LNG.

If successful, the FEED study could demonstrate how electrochemical carbon capture can be applied at the scale of LNG export facilities, opening new pathways for reducing emissions across energy-intensive sectors.

“For post-combustion capture on our on-site cogeneration facilities, we need a step change in carbon capture efficiency,” said Nick Flores, CEO, Coastal Bend LNG. 

“We’re highly encouraged by Solvanic’s preliminary technoeconomics and are keen to accelerate their technology readiness with this FEED study.”

“This FEED study accelerates our techno-economic analyses for gas processing and post-combustion carbon capture with the full engineering support of Coastal Bend LNG and their contractors,” added Dr Michael Nitzsche, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Solvanic.
