CO280 has awarded Preliminary Front-End Engineering and Design (Pre-FEED) contracts to tech and engineering suppliers as part of its exploration for a new carbon dioxide removal (CDR) collaboration with a pulp and paper mill in Canada.

The contracts were signed to evaluate the integration of CO280’s liquid amine carbon capture technology into its partner’s existing mill infrastructure, working on a system that will be able to capture and permanently store over 800,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 on an annual basis.

Slated to come online in 2029, this deployment will also generate carbon removal credits, and CO280 and its partnering companies are already working on marketing and selling credits to buyers.

The Pre-FEED contracts follow a Pre-Feasibility study, which CO280 and its pulp and paper partner successfully completed back in 2024. Currently, the partnering companies are working on community engagement consultations and project financing.

For CO280, this project further expands the company’s portfolio of more than 10 pulp and paper CDR integrations, located in the US Gulf Coast and Canada.

So far, one of its US Gulf Coast projects has also advanced to the FEED contracts stage, aiming to remove more than 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year once operational.

In a broader perspective, the company is set on a mission of tackling the carbon pollution from the pulp and paper industry in North America, estimated at more than 100 million tonnes of biogenic CO2 annually.

To that end, CO280 intends to develop a network of CDR installations at different sites, with several of its projects slated to provide carbon removal by 2030.

CO280 co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer Natalie Khtikian explained that reaching Pre-FEED with their mill partner in Canada is the company’s next step in developing the world’s largest network of CDR projects.

She added, “We have the potential to invest billions of dollars in the North American pulp and paper industry, supporting the communities that are built around this industry and making high-quality CDR available to a wider range of buyers.”
