Carbon capture and removal company CO280, in collaboration with SLB Capturi, has successfully completed a CO2 capture field pilot at a pulp and paper mill located on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
The pilot included the deployment of a Mobile Test Unit (MTU) powered by SLB Capturi’s liquid amine technology that served to capture biogenic CO2 from recovery boiler stack emissions at the pulp and paper mill.
Installed on the site back in Q3 of 2024, the MTU operated for 4,000 hours, achieving a consistent capture rate efficiency of 95%.
During the evaluation period, the MTU matched all key performance indicators, such as capture rate efficiency, energy consumption, solvent durability, and absorber emissions. CO280 shares that, currently, the system has a rated design capture capacity of 3 tonnes of CO2 per day (tpd).
SLB Capturi CEO Egil Fagerland stated, “The strong performance and results of the MTU at this mill validate all key process parameters and demonstrate that there are no technical barriers to deploying commercial-scale carbon capture plants.”
According to Jonathan Rhone, co-founder and CEO of CO280, this milestone clears the way for deploying commercial-scale carbon capture and removal projects at pulp and paper mills.
On its mission of retrofitting existing U.S. pulp and paper facilities with carbon capture technology, CO280 partners with top-performing companies like SLB Capturi, aiming to deliver impactful decarbonization solutions for the North American pulp and paper industry, which produces over 100 million tonnes of biogenic CO2 annually.
The captured CO2 gets permanently stored away from the atmosphere, delivering high-quality, affordable, and scalable carbon dioxide removal for interested clients on the carbon market.
Currently, CO280 is developing more than 10 carbon capture and removal projects at mills in the U.S. Gulf Coast and Canada, with several projects scheduled to deliver carbon removal by 2030.
