German company Co-reactive has secured ~$7.7 million (€6.5 million) in a seed funding round, intended to support its operations focused on the production of CO2-negative supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs).

The funding round was led by HTGF, with participation from NRW.Bank, HBG Ventures, AFI Ventures, Evercurious VC, and a number of seasoned climate-tech business angels.

Besides the seed funding, Co-reactive is also financially backed via public programs, such as the Federal Funding for Industry and Climate (BIK) from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

Set on a mission to turn CO2 into value, Co-reactive specializes in a continuous mineralization process that turns captured CO2 and natural minerals into carbon-negative supplementary cementitious materials.

When captured CO2 is combined with materials such as olivine or metallurgical slags (EAF & BOF), it creates a product that can be used to reduce clinker content and emissions in cement production. The CO2-negative SCM also maintains or improves the compressive strength of the cement material while also increasing its durability.

Co-reactive’s carbon mineralization process can be integrated within existing cement and construction material production lines.

Currently, the company is collaborating with CO2 and raw materials suppliers, cement and concrete producers, and certification bodies, looking to transition from pilot facilities for its technology to industrial-scale plants in the 100–300 kiloton range.

To that end, the funding secured in the seed round will go towards the expansion of its laboratory and pilot activities into a continuous demonstration plant that is projected to have a 1,000-ton annual capacity by Q2 2026.

Simultaneously, Co-reactive is teaming up with industrial partners as it gears up to introduce first-of-a-kind plants expected to operate at a tens-of-thousands-of-tons scale.

As shared by the company, these plants are envisioned to operate directly at cement and steel production sites, where they will serve to mineralize biogenic or process-related CO2 streams from 2027 onward.
