- China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) has injected over 13 million metric tons of CO2 to date, accounting for more than 60% of China’s total petroleum sector injections.
- First-half 2026 injection volumes reached 1.37 million tons, up 14.2% year-on-year, primarily utilizing CCUS for enhanced oil recovery (CCUS-EOR).
- CNPC plans to expand industrial CCUS clusters during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–30), integrating carbon storage with renewable energy and thermal power.
China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), the country’s largest oil and gas producer, has injected more than 13 million metric tons of carbon dioxide to date, representing over 60% of the total cumulative injection volume achieved across China’s petroleum sector.
The milestone was confirmed at a State Council Information Office briefing by Zhang Deping, a technical lead at CNPC’s Jilin Oilfield. Across China’s broader oil industry, cumulative CO2 injection has now approached 20 million tons as state-owned majors transition CCUS technologies from pilot demonstrations into commercial scale-up.
In the first half of 2026, CNPC injected over 1.37 million tons of CO2, a 14.2% year-on-year increase. The company’s strategy relies heavily on carbon capture, utilization, and storage for enhanced oil recovery (CCUS-EOR), which sequesters carbon in depleted reservoirs while boosting crude recovery rates.
The expansion aligns with national decarbonization targets, with China now hosting over 120 CCUS demonstration projects in various stages of operation or planning.
Proprietary Value Chain Development and 15th Five-Year Plan Targets
To secure technical independence across the CCUS value chain, CNPC has developed localized low-energy capture technologies, supercritical pipeline transport systems, and specialized geological monitoring tools.
The initiative comes as global operational carbon capture capacity reached 73 million tons per year in 2026, according to industry estimates from S&P Global.
Looking ahead to China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), CNPC intends to build out integrated industrial CCUS clusters, linking carbon management facilities directly with renewable power projects and clean thermal energy generation to preserve domestic hydrocarbon output while curbing emissions.
