Climeworks has announced two new strategic additions to its Advisory Board that will help the company advance on scaling direct air capture (DAC) technology with lower costs and curating removal portfolios for global buyers.
This week, the Climeworks Advisory Board welcomed Celine Herweijer, former Group Chief Sustainability Officer of HSBC, and Mark Kroese, former General Manager of Sustainability Solutions at Microsoft.
Together, Herweijer and Kroese bring insights and knowledge from decades of working in organizations that have been early supporters and long-standing backers of carbon dioxide removal (CDR).
As part of the Advisory Board, the two senior industry experts will counsel Climeworks on decisions around its commercial strategy, customer engagement, and market priorities.
Leveraging their experience working with major corporate buyers, Herweijer and Kroese will help Climeworks match evolving customer needs as it guides companies looking to deploy credible, durable CDR.
Celine Herweijer, a Columbia University PhD in climate modeling and policy, is vice chair of the We Mean Business Coalition and formerly served on HSBC’s Group Executive Committee as Group Chief Sustainability Officer.
Before her role at HSBC, Herweijer was a partner at PwC and the firm’s Global Sustainability and Innovation Leader. As a member of the Climeworks Advisory Board, she will contribute expertise on corporate sustainability strategy, sustainable finance, and investment readiness.
Mark Kroese, on the other hand, will enrich the Advisory Board with his professional perspective built through years of working at the intersection of technology and sustainability.

Having held the position of general manager at Microsoft Sustainability Solutions and multiple other senior leadership roles within the Microsoft ecosystem, Kroese brings strong expertise in building and positioning CDR portfolios for large corporate buyers, particularly in the technology sector.
The two new members will help Climeworks strengthen its ability to assist corporate entities looking to incorporate carbon removals into their sustainability strategies.
Climeworks CEO Christoph Gebald stated, “What has always set Climeworks apart is its ability to attract the very best. I am thrilled to welcome Celine and Mark to our Advisory Board. They bring unparalleled experience from organizations that helped pioneer the carbon removal market. Their guidance will be critical as we scale direct air capture, drive costs down, and strengthen our leading carbon removal portfolio service to meet growing corporate demand for durable, high-integrity solutions.”
