Climeworks has partnered with Ghana-based biochar company Truecoco, signing an offtake agreement for 90,000 high-quality carbon removal credits certified by Puro.earth. As shared in the announcement, the partnership will extend until 2032.
Located in the Western Region of Ghana, Truecoco specializes in a controlled pyrolysis process that converts agricultural biomass residues into a premium biochar product.
For the biochar production activities of this project, Truecoco will tackle coconut husk waste, providing a reliable pathway for its sustainable disposal. The resulting biochar product is expected to deliver both carbon removal results and soil health improvements, helping agricultural sites in this area build up climate resilience.
Daniel Kagey, Head of Supply at Truecoco, stated, “The deal we have done with Climeworks has led to real change on the ground in Ghana, jobs where there were no jobs, people being able to pay for education and healthcare where before they could not. And that is a great legacy, more meaningful than any charity donation.”
Besides its focus on carbon removal, to date, Truecoco has also delivered other advances in this region, training over 180 smallholder farmers in soil biochar use and establishing 12 coconut cooperatives, 3 of which are female-led.
Its project has also created more than 35 direct and over 100 indirect jobs, ranging across different sectors such as transport, aggregation, and supply chains.
Truecoco is the first biochar project in West Africa to receive Puro.earth certification, testifying to its integrity and quality of activities. Additionally, the project is in close cooperation with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Ghana, and together, the two entities are collaborating on studies that aim to evaluate the biochar effect on crops such as cocoa, rubber, pepper, okra, and coconut seedlings.
