Climate Impact Partners and Green Earth have signed a long-term offtake agreement with a pharmaceutical company for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits from the Mount Kenya Regenerative Agroforestry Project.
Under the agreement, the pharmaceutical company is investing in the full volume of verified credits expected to come from this project, which, according to the announcement, should exceed 1.5 million tonnes.
Located in the Mount Kenya and Aberdare regions—two of the most important ecological areas in Kenya—the project is created by carbon project development specialist and nature restoration company Green Earth.
This initiative includes reforestation and agroforestry operations on a territory of up to 15,000 hectares in areas affected by forest degradation and land conversion.
The purpose of the Mount Kenya Regenerative Agroforestry Project is to restore the native tree cover and improve soil and water health in the two Kenyan regions, while also protecting the biodiversity and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for thousands of smallholder farmers.
The pharmaceutical company partnered with Climate Impact Partners, trusting it to select and secure this high-quality project by leveraging its deep carbon market expertise to ensure it aligns with requirements around climate, community, and biodiversity impact.
According to Green Earth, by working on large-scale landscape restoration in these regions, the Mount Kenya Regenerative Agroforestry Project is expected to recover native species and habitats while also boosting the soil and water quality, which will in turn improve the climate and community resilience in this area.

Shaped around a community-centered design, the project will also enhance the livelihoods of the local population, organizing trainings and creating new employment and income opportunities for smallholder farmers.
In 2024, the project was validated and registered under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), and the first carbon credit issuance is expected in 2027.
With expert guidance from Climate Impact Partners, the project is now transitioning to the VM0047 methodology, which is an ICVCM Core Carbon Principles (CCP) approved methodology for Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR).
