Durable carbon removal platform CDR.fyi has updated its data model with new features that further enhance its comprehensive system for tracking CO2 removal orders.

Driven by an expanding carbon removal industry that took only a few years to evolve from basic transactions into an emerging but complex commodity market, CDR.fyi felt the need to boost its platform with even more accuracy and detail that enable transparency and accountability in this dynamic sector.

Following six months of optimizations, the updated version of CDR.fyi‘s data model made its public debut in April 2025, receiving positive early feedback from stakeholders in the carbon removal ecosystem.

The updated platform now offers a granular overview of many of the steps taken in carbon removal orders, reflecting all events with accuracy, consistency, and completeness.

In that sense, the CDR.fyi Data Model now places an even clearer distinction between delivery vs. retirement, with dedicated fields and linkages that follow every tonne of CO2 from contract signature to final retirement.

Additionally, it offers better clarity on all actors and events along the carbon removal deal, including both announcement and contract dates, differentiating registries from monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) providers and identifying all intermediaries such as buying groups, marketplaces, brokers, and syndicates, which are now all tagged, preventing the double-counting of volumes.

The financial details of every deal are organized to show the total contract value and price per tonne in separate fields, while the status of orders is expanded to include two new options: placeholder (where counterparties are known and the volume is confidential) and void (for cases of supplier insolvency or termination).

Data submitters can choose to keep counterparties private while still sharing details on the deal to be used for reconciliation purposes. Any edits made to submitted data will now be auditable, with all retirements explicitly linked back to their originating orders.

The new CDR.fyi Data Model also delves deeper into source tracking, factoring in every data point from press release to registry entry.
