CDR.fyi Points To Market Growth, With Nearly 15M Tonnes Of Contracted CDR By May 2025 - Carbon Herald

CDR.fyi, the platform dedicated to accelerating durable carbon removal, has released new statistics from its portal that show a market growth this year, topped with nearly 15 million tonnes in CO2 removal contracts by May 2025.

According to CDR.fyi, the volume of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) contracted so far in 2025 has already reached 1.9 times the amount contracted in all of 2024, which was 8 million tonnes.

2025 began with slow carbon removal activity, but the pace gradually picked up, marking increases in contracts as the months progressed.

In January 2025, contracts were standing at 64.4K tonnes, nearly tripling by February with 189.9K tonnes recorded.

March then brought a further surge, with volumes rising to 403.2K tonnes, warming up the stage for April, which stole the show with the striking 10.8 million tonnes in CDR contracts, a number that accounted for over 70% of the year’s volume to date.

May kept the momentum going with recorded data for 3.5 million tonnes in CDR contracts, signaling a steady interest and corporate demand for durable carbon removal.

This year’s CDR growth has so far been carried on the shoulders of a number of high-profile partnerships.

During this time, Microsoft emerged as the leading carbon removal investor, locking in a deal for 6.75 million tonnes of CDR with AtmosClear, an agreement for 3.69 million tonnes with CO280, another contract for 1.75 million tonnes with Stockholm Exergi, and a deal with Exomad Green for 1.24 million tonnes that marked the largest biochar agreement in the industry.

Other notable contracts include an offtake agreement for 50K tonnes between JPMorgan Chase and CO280, a 100K-tonne deal between Frontier buyers and Hafslund Oslo Celsio, and Capgemini’s long-term deals with Climeworks and Charm Industrial that round up at nearly 29.5K tonnes of CDR.

These contracts reflect a growing confidence in carbon removal solutions, and they signal a potential for meaningful CDR scaling by the end of 2025.
