CDR.fyi and OPIS have published the results of their collaborative survey launched in October 2024 looking to collect more information and paint a clearer picture of the pricing of durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR).
The survey came in two versions, one for CDR purchasers and one for CDR suppliers, gathering opinions on both ends of transactions.

After the received responses were processed, it became clear that there is a substantial gap in price perceptions between prospective purchasers and suppliers, both currently in 2025 and in future projections for 2030.
Carbon removal buyers who have already purchased credits generally reported stronger prices than purchasers that had yet to dip into the market.
On the provider side, suppliers who have already had credits transactions generally reported lower prices for 2030 compared to other CDR providers who had yet to sell. In regard to prices for 2025, previous and expected suppliers perspectives were mixed, depending on the CDR project method.
These mismatched price expectations are present across different carbon removal methods, including enhanced weathering, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), biochar and other biomass methods, direct air capture with carbon storage (DACCS), marine CDR (mCDR), and mineralization.
In a broader sense, on average both purchasers and providers estimated that in five years prices would fall, in some cases dramatically.
Carbon removal is a sector of vital importance in the fight against climate change.

However, as this industry is still nascent, expenses on the provider side are high, and CDR suppliers struggle to bring down the end price of their solutions, a move that would attract more buyers and enable bolder investments, eventually leading to CDR scaling.
According to the work put together by CDR.fyi and OPIS, what the CDR market needs in order to grow is better-informed and educated new purchasers along with CDR providers who will resort to innovations in order to bring down the costs of their services.
In an attempt to further define the CDR space, CDR.fyi is also organizing a 2025 CDR Market Survey in partnership with Sylvera.
