CDR.fyi and OSCAR have launched a new market survey, aiming to shed more light on the process of contracting durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

This effort intends to identify points of friction in durable CDR deal-making, pinning down the segments that need to be addressed further to ensure smoother transactions.

Launched at the COP30 event in Brazil, the Open Standard Carbon Removal Purchase Agreement (OSCAR) laid the foundation for improved contracting, offering a standardized legal CDR contract template. OSCAR provides a ready-made, trustworthy structure for entering CDR agreements, replacing the complex process of negotiating contracts from scratch.

While issues such as monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV), CDR pricing, and buyer demand are at the forefront of sector discussions, contracting still remains underexplored, with little information available on how suppliers negotiate, draft, and execute CDR offtake agreements.

CDR.fyi and OSCAR now want to tackle this knowledge gap, hoping to gather valuable feedback through their newly launched market survey.

This is the first survey dedicated to understanding how CDR market actors go through and experience the contracting process from the term sheet signing phase to the actual deal closing.

Through it, CDR.fyi and OSCAR aim to gather real feedback from stakeholders active on the ground, with the purpose of defining the weak spots in the contracting process as well as identifying best practices that have been working so far and evaluating where shared infrastructure like OSCAR can make the biggest difference.

In the survey, respondents are asked questions around the number of transactions and counterparties they have worked with, how long they have been active on the market, and how long contracting typically takes.

Other questions focus on the legal resources suppliers rely on, the biggest negotiating challenges they have experienced, and whether and how they are affected by the lack of standardized contracts.

CDR suppliers and project developers are invited to participate in the survey, which takes approximately 5 minutes to complete.

The responses will directly inform how OSCAR and CDR.fyi continue to develop shared infrastructure for the carbon removal market.
