CCSA Fortifies Its Leadership With New EU Director - Carbon Herald

The Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA) announced that it has appointed Thierry Grauwels as its new EU Director, a decision that entered into force this May.

This appointment is yet another step that strengthens the CCSA on its mission of supporting the development of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) across Europe.

In his new role of EU Director, Thierry Grauwels will be in charge of CCSA’s Brussels-based operations centered around the commercial deployment of large-scale integrated CCUS projects in Europe.

Commenting on the occasion, Thierry stated, “I’m excited to join the CCSA team and help drive the deployment of such a crucial technology like CCUS to ensure energy security while decarbonizing the economy.”

With 25+ years of experience in the transformation of the energy market, Grauwels has accumulated a deep understanding of this sector’s value chain, covering aspects like gas, electricity, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide.

His professional background includes development work on large-scale, capital-intensive initiatives ranging across gas infrastructure, power plants, and CO2 capture projects.

At his previous roles, he’s also been a part of value chain operations focused on commercial, merger and acquisition, financing, and advocacy activities. His expert, industry-specific insights will bring a valuable perspective to the CCSA vision, further fortifying a dedicated and passionate team.

The CCSA has also shared that it has welcomed Stefano Miriello in the role of EU Deputy Director, who is being promoted after months of serving as the Head of EU External Affairs for the CCSA’s Europe operations.

These leadership updates come after the CCSA appointed Olivia Powis as its new CEO back in August 2024. Towards the end of last year, the association also selected a new director to lead its UK-based operations in the face of energy sector savant Mark Sommerfeld.

With a new EU Director and Deputy Director, the CCSA is preparing to tap into any opportunities enabled through the European Commission’s Clean Industrial Deal, which has signaled significant support for the development of carbon capture, utilization, and storage in the European Union.
