CCS+ Initiative Unveils U.S. Guide To Integrated Carbon Accounting Infrastructure

CCS+ Initiative Unveils US Guide To Integrated Carbon Accounting Infrastructure - Carbon Herald

The CCS+ Initiative recently released its U.S. guide to an integrated carbon accounting infrastructure for the industrial carbon management market.

Designed to support regulators, policymakers, and civil society, the guide aims to incentivize the responsible adoption of critical carbon reduction and removal technologies.

Co-authored by experts from South Pole, Oscar Rueda, Laura Camarut and Christiaan Gevers Deynoot, the report is based on workshops conducted with the US Department of Energy (DOE).

These workshops focused on the synergies between CCS+ work and existing U.S. regulations and policies, as well as how CCS+ can contribute to the responsible adoption of carbon removal technologies within voluntary and compliance markets.

The CCS+ Initiative addresses two key priorities for advancing the U.S. climate mitigation agenda: promoting carbon management technologies (CCS, CCU, CDR) and establishing robust standards for carbon credits.

The CCS+ Initiative U.S. guide provides a blueprint for building a robust carbon accounting infrastructure tailored to the industrial carbon management landscape in the United States.

Key features of the CCS+ U.S. guide include:

  • Comprehensive framework: The guide offers methodologies, tools, and modules to quantify emission reductions and removals through various carbon management activities.
  • High-integrity certification: It supports the creation of a high-quality certification framework to ensure the credibility of carbon credits.
  • Synergies with US regulations: The guide identifies opportunities and challenges associated with adopting carbon management technologies while aligning with existing US regulations.
  • Environmental and community well-being: The approach prioritizes environmental protection and community well-being alongside achieving net-zero emissions.

By leveraging the well-developed solutions and decades of experience in carbon accounting, US regulators and the public can harness the CCS+ carbon accounting infrastructure to drive climate action and achieve the country’s net-zero goals.
