Catona Climate has achieved a significant milestone by investing in an Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) project in Antioquia, Colombia, the climate finance firm said in a statement on Wednesday.
The investment, in partnership with NatureRe, aims to restore over 60,000 hectares of degraded land and sequester an estimated 18 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).
According to Catona Climate, the project demonstrates the potential for scalable, high-integrity nature-based climate solutions in one of the world’s most biodiverse regions.
ANR promotes natural regrowth by addressing barriers like invasive species and unsustainable land use while implementing targeted interventions such as planting native species, controlling grazing, and managing invasive grasses.
These activities restore ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and provide critical ecosystem services like improved soil health and clean water.

The project is expected to sequester more than 400 tons of CO2e per hectare over 40 years, and Catona Climate’s innovative finance model underpins this effort.
Through rigorous due diligence, including site visits, geospatial data analysis, and third-party assessments, the company de-risks early-stage projects, attracting enterprise buyers and additional investors.
A Fortune 50 customer has already expressed interest in the Antioquia project, which aligns with Catona Climate’s mission to fund impactful nature-based solutions.
NatureRe, which began applying ANR techniques in the Chocó region of Colombia in 2014, will scale its efforts with support from Catona Climate.
Beyond climate benefits, the project will restore biodiversity, improve water quality, reduce fire risks, and create local jobs.
Future plans include educational programs and initiatives to empower women in neighboring communities.
