Cascade Climate Grants $1.2M To Advance ERW Science Across Nine Countries - Carbon Herald

Cascade Climate, in partnership with the Grantham Foundation, Google, and Frontier, has awarded more than $1.2 million in funding to support nine innovative projects in the field of enhanced rock weathering (ERW).

This initiative uses a “piggybacking” model—where academic researchers build on existing ERW deployments to conduct field-based scientific investigations, Cascade said earlier this week.

The selected projects target key areas of ERW research, such as secondary mineral formation, changes in soil organic carbon stocks, and the movement of weathering products through soil systems.

Each research team has committed to openly sharing their findings, both through scientific publications and by contributing data to the ERW Data Quarry.

This open-access approach ensures that valuable, high-quality field data will be available to the broader research community, according to Cascade.

Spanning diverse climates, soil types, and agricultural systems, these projects are spread across nine countries—bringing global insight into the performance and potential of ERW as a scalable carbon removal solution.

Cascade’s request for proposals was highly competitive, with nearly 40 applications received, using a diverse range of methods and sites to address the three key research priorities.

Awardees were chosen through a two-stage review process, including internal screening for scientific value beyond standard MRV practices, followed by evaluation from 11 external experts in fields like geochemistry and agronomy.

Advisory board members Kate Maher and Noah Planavsky helped guide the process to ensure it was fair, efficient, and grounded in relevant expertise.

More information on the ERW Field Data Partnership Grants, the awardees and the overall process can be found here.
