Carbonfuture will provide its digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (dMRV) services for one of the largest biochar initiatives being developed in Western Australia by Biomass Projects, with the help of Residual.
By 2028, this initiative, called the Mardie char project, is expected to reach an annual carbon removal volume of 500,000 tonnes, standing out as one of the world’s most ambitious undertakings in this sector.
Specialized in providing rigorous due diligence, accurate tracking, and seamless facilitation of third-party verification and certification at scale, Carbonfuture will streamline the data management and accountability for this project through its Carbonfuture MRV+ system.
Carbonfuture will monitor operations from the point of carbon capture to credit issuance, ensuring every step is performed with transparency, reliability, and efficiency.
The credits will be certified by Puro.earth, following the criteria laid out in the Puro Standard.
Besides its dMRV services, Carbonfuture will also offer the high-quality carbon removal credits from this project to interested buyers. The project is said to have already attracted the interest of major carbon dioxide removal (CDR) purchasers active on the market.
Biomass Projects is on a mission to tackle Western Australia’s infestation of the invasive mesquite species, converting its biomass into carbon-sequestering biochar, while simultaneously restoring water tables drained by 11 billion cubic meters annually and enabling the comeback and regeneration of native plant species.
This landmark biochar project also carries an important cultural value, as the environmental restoration of sites will enable Australian Traditional Owners to access places considered sacred and deeply embedded in ancestry and spiritual identity.

Commenting on the collaboration with Carbonfuture, Biomass Projects CEO Richard Paterson stated, “Carbonfuture MRV+ enables us to efficiently manage the unprecedented scale of data required for certification and ensures our credits meet the highest levels of quality demanded by global carbon credit buyers.”
Residual partnership to support with ratings and offtake
The project is being developed with guidance and expertise from Residual, who will integrate carbon credit ratings, insurance, and offtake strategies into the project planning, making sure operations are technically sound and financially viable from the get-go.
Speaking to Carbon Herald, Residual co-founder Ted Christie-Miller pointed out that this project is yet another testament to the growing interest in nature-based climate solutions and biochar in particular.
As he explained, the biomass to be processed into biochar through the Mardie char project would have otherwise been incinerated, while now it will generate value.
This initiative will also help address the pressing issue of invasive species in Western Australia, where the mesquite infestation has already spread across more than 300,000 hectares.
While Residual is strategically focused in South America, Christie-Miller acknowledges Australia’s potential for becoming a nature-based carbon removal hub, where the ACCU market could play a major role going forward.
