CarbonFree And US Steel Sign Landmark Carbon Capture Deal

CarbonFree And US Steel Sign Landmark Carbon Capture Deal - Carbon Herald

Carbon capture pioneer CarbonFree has just announced the signing of a landmark deal with American steel giant US Steel.

The historic deal will seek to tackle carbon emissions from US Steel‘s Gary Works blast furnaces in a first-of-a-kind project that will utilize CarbonFree’s innovative SkyCycle™ technology to capture and store up to 50,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.

With potential for expansion in the future, this project marks a significant step towards a greener steel industry.

This collaboration aligns perfectly with US Steel’s ambitious goal of slashing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 20% by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and serves as a springboard to explore wider implementation of SkyCycle technology across the steel manufacturer’s operations.

Additionally, the captured carbon will be used to create eco-friendly steel products, like verdeX™, catering to the growing demand for low-carbon solutions.

Construction of the SkyCycle plant at Gary Works is slated to begin as early as summer 2024, with operations estimated to commence in 2026. The agreement spans 20 years after the project goes live.

Capturing And Making Good Use Of CO2 Emissions

CarbonFree’s ingenious SkyCycle solution captures carbon emissions from industrial sources before they pollute the air.

The captured carbon is then transformed into a carbon-neutral form of calcium carbonate, a crucial ingredient in various products like paper, plastics, and building materials.

This eco-friendly calcium carbonate can significantly reduce Scope 3 emissions in global supply chains or be stored safely without pipelines or disposal wells.
