Carbon Removal Commitments Proposal Gathers Signatures From 53 Companies - Carbon Removal

The Negative Emissions Platform has announced that it has collected the signatures of 53 companies who pledged their support for the Carbon Dioxide Removal Industry Commitments initiative.

This initiative aims to navigate collective action within the carbon dioxide removal (CDR) sector, making sure that efforts are aligned with the goals laid out by the Paris Agreement.

The Carbon Dioxide Removal Industry Commitments were introduced by the Negative Emissions Platform, a coalition of leading carbon removal companies that set out to instigate an operational standard within their industry, offering companies a chance to sign up and support the cause.

Led by the idea that the planet needs to have retired its fossil-fuel dependency by 2050, the Negative Emissions Platform was founded by Climeworks, Reverce, and the Carbon Drawdown initiative, growing to a vast range of prominent members, including Microsoft, Stripe, and Volkswagen, among many other industry heavyweights.

The organization proudly announced that their motion for carbon removal commitments has been signed by 53 companies who back the idea of a unified standard for action when it comes to removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Earlier this year, the Negative Emissions Platform released a draft version of the commitments, inviting the public to comment and provide feedback on this idea.

Touching upon fundamental topics, the final version of the commitments lays out guidelines for carbon removal, separated into four key pillars.

The first pillar stands for setting clear definitions about the role of CDR in global climate action and clarifying what carbon removal really means, followed by a second pillar that focuses on the commitment to science and recognizing the need of CDR in climate strategies.

The commitments also bring attention to sustainability and transparency, urging their subscribers to maintain the highest standards of accountability and respect with regard to regulations. The last pillar within the shared commitments promotes public engagement, advocating for inclusivity and fairness in carbon removal activities.

With this undertaking, the Negative Emissions Platform hopes to catalyze growth within the carbon removal industry, streamlining collective transparent action towards clearly set, climate-relevant targets.
