Carbon markets are entering a transformative phase, with Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) and carbon offsets forecast to exceed a combined market value of trillions of dollars by 2050.
Driven by rising corporate climate commitments, stricter regulations, and advancing technologies, both sectors are set for rapid growth, according to two long-term outlook reports (available upon request with the team listed here) from leading research and consulting firm Wood Mackenzie.
CCUS capacity is expected to expand 28-fold, reaching 2,061 million tonnes per year (mtpa), and attracting at least $1.2 trillion in investments focused on point-source emissions.
Meanwhile, the carbon offset market is projected to top $150 billion, with offset volumes growing sixfold and carbon removals comprising over 40% of total offsets by mid-century.

“CCUS will likely become crucial for abating process emissions in hard-to-abate industries,” Hetal Gandhi, lead analyst at Wood Mackenzie, said in a statement earlier this week.
The convergence of CCUS and carbon offsets is becoming a cornerstone of global net-zero strategies, as companies are increasingly combining these tools to manage both direct and indirect emissions.
Offsets offer immediate flexibility, while CCUS provides long-term reduction capabilities. Demand is particularly strong in sectors like cement, refining, and steel, where emissions are difficult to eliminate.
Policy support and standardization are playing a pivotal role. Evolving carbon pricing mechanisms, alongside stricter rules on offset quality and permanence, are helping align markets and build trust.
However, challenges remain, including infrastructure gaps, offset credibility, and the need for continued government backing—especially for CCUS over the next decade.
“The carbon offset market will grow remarkably,” said Michelle Uriarte-Ruiz, senior analyst. “This blend of solutions forges a more resilient carbon value chain.”
As these markets mature, they are poised to reshape corporate sustainability strategies and accelerate global decarbonization, offering significant opportunities for early investors and innovators.
