Carbon Engineering (CE) announced on March 30th 2021 that the company and its partner Shopify, are looking for new collaborators to work on CO2 storage methods. The deadline for interested potential partners to apply is April 15th, 2021.
As mitigating the worst effects of climate change is pressuring the world, systems like carbon capture require a safe storage of the extracted CO2 emissions. Managing and efficiently disposing through permanent storage or underground carbon sequestration is needed.
Carbon Engineering is providing one side of the equation – the Direct Air Capture (DAC) of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Its technology is capable of deploying at large scale to capture megatons of CO2 directly out of the air at each facility. It needs to be combined with permanent CO2 storage solutions to provide the full spectrum of the carbon negative equation.
The company signed an agreement with Shopify on March 9th, for 10,000 tons of CO2 capture and storage. Together the two companies want to invest in carbon removal and storage to kick start the market. The goal is for carbon capture to reach economies of scale and the cost of the technology to drop.
Carbon Engineering Innovation Center
The company is currently constructing its Innovation Center which is CE’s first commercial plant. When completed it will be the world’s largest DAC facility, capable of capturing one million tons of CO2 per year. CE and Shopify are looking for companies to help with innovative solutions for storing the captured CO2 for the long-term at the Innovation Centre.
The submissions accepted from interested companies include carbon dioxide storage methods like CO2 mineralization, storage in products, and innovative new forms of geologic storage. The criteria for potential partners are:
- in a position to accept and store CO2 starting in 2022
- ideally located in the Pacific Northwest or other regions close to Squamish, B.C.
