Carbon Direct has partnered with C2X on a project in Louisiana that converts forestry and sawmill residues into biofuel while also delivering durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

The collaboration is focused on C2X’s flagship initiative called the Beaver Lake Biofuels project, located at the former International Paper site in Rapides Parish in Louisiana.

At this location, C2X, majority controlled by the A.P. Moller Group with ENEOS, and a majority owner of SunGas Renewables Inc., runs operations that tackle the forest residues left behind by the declining U.S. pulp and paper industry.

Namely, Louisiana is now home to closed mills and an oversupply of forestry and sawmill byproducts, as well as vast amounts of thinnings, such as wood, tree tops, and bark.

Strategically launched in this area, the Beaver Lake project utilizes the abundantly available sustainably sourced biomass to create a clean fuel called biomethanol, achieving carbon removal results that offer geological CO2 storage for over 1,000 years.

To convert the biomass into biogenic syngas, the project will utilize three SunGas Renewables S1000 gasifier systems, integrating other leading, commercially proven technologies to produce bio-methanol.

On an annual basis, the project is expected to produce approximately 550,000 tonnes of bio-methanol, durably storing about 1 million tonnes of CO2 per year. These services have already attracted long-term agreements with leading buyers, including a deal with Microsoft for 3.6 million metric tonnes of CDR over a period of 12 years.

Currently, the project is working on completing the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase soon, expecting to reach a final investment decision (FID) this year that would set it up for delivery starting in 2029.

As part of this project, Carbon Direct and its Supply Services division will provide scientific expertise and carbon market knowledge to ensure alignment with the highest durability, measurement, and verification standards.

Under the partnership, Carbon Direct’s Supply Services team will also serve as a market channel for the project’s carbon removal credits, working on securing offtake agreements that would support the project’s further development.
