Carbon Direct has released a new report that provides a roadmap for combining the mitigation of superpollutants with carbon dioxide removal (CDR) efforts for a sustained climate impact.

The publication is intended to serve as a guide for companies and other entities working on climate strategies that will include both immediate and long-term environmental benefits.

Superpollutants, such as methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases, are responsible for 35–50% of the current global warming, and efforts to curb these pollutants result in meaningful near-term climate benefits, but as many of these gases have short atmospheric lifetimes, these mitigation benefits decline over time.

Carbon dioxide removal, on the other hand, provides smaller cooling initially, but its impact delivers moderate climate benefits that last longer, for well over a century.

Carbon Direct’s report shows a novel “annual warming matching” approach, which tracks the actual atmospheric impact over time of each of these mitigation interventions, rather than relying solely on Global Warming Potential (GWP) metrics.

This approach enables the combining of short-lived superpollutant tackling efforts with those for durable CDR, creating a way for maintaining consistently negative warming profiles in all future years.

With the framework provided in the report, Carbon Direct’s approach determines contractual commitments for both of these interventions, sharing recommendations for implementation in corporate climate strategies.

Dr. Colin McCormick, Chief Innovation Officer at Carbon Direct, explains, “Superpollutant mitigation and CDR aren’t competing strategies—they’re complementary interventions that work together across different timescales. When paired appropriately, superpollutant reductions provide immediate cooling, while CDR addresses longer-term effects.”

Stressing the need for urgent climate action, the report outlines four concrete recommendations for corporate buyers.

In that regard, the report states that buyers should continue superpollutant mitigation regardless of existing CDR investments, assess annual warming impacts instead of relying exclusively on GWP100 accounting, and combine superpollutants abatement with durable CDR to ensure consistently negative warming.

Additionally, they should communicate the impact of these interventions transparently, clearly articulating when they deliver cooling benefits and for how long they last.

Further details and explanations on this breakthrough approach can be found in the report, available at the Carbon Direct website.
