Carbon Direct And Microsoft Unveil 2024 Standards For Top-Tier Carbon Removal Solutions - Carbon Herald

Carbon Direct, alongside Microsoft, launched the 2024 edition of their “High-Quality Carbon Dioxide Removal Criteria.” This update builds upon their initial efforts in 2021 to tackle quality concerns within the voluntary carbon market. The aim is to establish strict, science-backed guidelines for carbon capture projects.

These guidelines offer ongoing support to project developers, ensuring their initiatives meet the highest standards. Additionally, they equip buyers of carbon removal credits with a reliable framework to assess the quality of their investments.

“Since first publishing the Criteria in 2021, Microsoft and Carbon Direct have been on a mission to establish and share benchmarks that provide a roadmap for project developers to deliver high-quality tonnes, increase buyer confidence, and drive market demand for these critical climate mitigation tools,” said Jon Goldberg, CEO, Carbon Direct.

“The 2024 edition of the Criteria continues to refine these benchmarks, aligning them with the latest scientific and policy knowledge to accelerate scale in the voluntary carbon market.”

Enhanced Benchmarks and Environmental Impact Considerations

The latest edition outlines key principles for high-quality carbon capture and strengthens the benchmarks for established and emerging methods within the voluntary market, including direct air capture, reforestation efforts, and biomass-based capture solutions.

Furthermore, the 2024 update offers revised guidance across all six core principles, alongside specific updates for each carbon removal approach.

All carbon capture projects, regardless of engineered, hybrid, or nature-based approaches, have a physical footprint and impact the surrounding environment.

Recognizing this crucial link, the updated guidelines provide enhanced guidance for both buyers and developers, with continued emphasis on environmental justice, fair processes, and social considerations.

For clarity and to avoid confusion with corporate carbon accounting, the 2024 edition replaces “Carbon accounting and monitoring, reporting, and verification” with “Measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification.”

The Growing Need for Carbon Removal

The latest report from the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emphasizes the critical role of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in reaching climate mitigation goals laid out in the Paris Agreement.

By 2030, over one billion tonnes of carbon removal will be needed annually, with this number rising to 5-10 billion tonnes per year by 2050.

Currently, only a minuscule 0.008 billion tonnes of CO2 are captured annually through high-quality methods. Recognizing this gap, both public and private entities are ramping up efforts to accelerate the development of high-quality carbon capture solutions.

The recent Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) in the United States have spurred significant new investments and advancements in carbon capture technologies.

Additionally, in May 2024, the US government took a crucial step to improve credit quality when the White House issued the Voluntary Carbon Markets Joint Policy Statement and Principles.

Leading companies like Microsoft are actively acquiring high-quality carbon projects across various approaches (nature-based, hybrid, and engineered), demonstrating a clear market demand for these solutions.
