UK-based Carbon Clean, a leading provider of point source carbon capture solutions, has strategically expanded into Canada by opening a new office in Calgary to address growing demand for its technology.

The company aims to bolster its workforce throughout 2024 to keep pace with the increasing interest in its modular technology CycloneCC, it said in a statement Wednesday.

Specializing in providing cost-effective industrial carbon capture solutions for challenging sectors such as oil and gas, cement, and steel, Carbon Clean boasts an operational footprint in 49 sites worldwide.

With one of the most extensive project portfolios among independent carbon capture businesses, the company has cumulatively captured over 2.1 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Active in Canada for three years, Carbon Clean has garnered support from influential energy players, including Calgary-based TC Energy.

Aniruddha Sharma, Chair and CEO of Carbon Clean, emphasized the attractiveness of the Canadian market due to recent initiatives incentivizing investment in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).

Calgary’s pivotal role in the push for decarbonization and ambitious net-zero goals prompted Carbon Clean to choose it for its Canadian presence.

The 2023 Fall Economic Statement unveiled a Canadian program offering investment tax credits for CCUS, with the federal government facilitating carbon contracts for difference through the Canada Growth Fund.

This aligns with Canada’s broader strategy to meet emission reduction targets and decarbonize hard-to-abate industries, responsible for 30% of global emissions.

Carbon Clean’s decision to select Calgary is driven by the city’s emergence as a hub for decarbonization efforts, underscored by initiatives like the Alberta Carbon Capture Incentive Program (ACCIP), introduced in November 2023.

This positive environment enhances demand for industrial carbon capture solutions.

Building on its 2022 move to larger global headquarters in London and the establishment of its US headquarters in Houston, Texas, Carbon Clean’s presence in Canada reinforces its commitment to meeting the global demand for sustainable carbon capture technologies.
