This week, Carbon Clean announced the successful completion of the first industrial deployment of its CycloneCC technology.
The modular carbon capture unit was installed at Fertiglobe’s nitrogen fertilizer plant in the Al Ruwais Industrial Complex in Abu Dhabi, where it ran for a period of six months, achieving around 4,000 operating hours.
This deployment was marked by an industry-first milestone, where Carbon Clean managed to install the CycloneCC unit on location in under a week, validating the feasibility of this novel system.
During its continuous operation, the unit delivered a high-purity CO2 product that extended beyond envisioned targets, meeting the CO2 purity requirements laid out by Fertiglobe.
Following this productive deployment, Carbon Clean announced that the CycloneCC solution is now at Technology Readiness Level 7 (TRL 7), and system validation has greenlighted the further scale-up and commercialization of this technology.
Designed with a process intensification that brings a tenfold reduction in mass transfer equipment, the CycloneCC modular technology effectively lowers the overall footprint by up to 50%, presenting a more viable carbon capture solution than other options of this type.
It contains rotating packed beds (RPBs) and a proprietary amine-promoted buffer salt APBS-CDRMax solvent that enhances its carbon capture efficiency, delivering extremely high performance.

Additionally, the innovative use of AI by Carbon Clean contributed to the system’s advanced reliability and availability, along with maximized solvent performance. While the plant operated in open-loop mode, human operators improved processes with AI-suggested recommendations.
Carbon Clean Chair and CEO Aniruddha Sharma commented, “Fertiglobe’s willingness to invest in first-of-a-kind (FOAK) projects cements its status as a decarbonization pioneer. Our collaboration with Fertiglobe for this industrial demonstration unit is a major step towards CycloneCC’s full commercialization so that it can be deployed at scale globally.”
He added, “Installing a carbon capture plant in less than a week is a feat never achieved before. We’re excited to have delivered this industry first in carbon capture.”
