Project Kirkenær, a bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) initiative by Norwegian developer Carbon Centric, has successfully completed the Puro.earth Preliminary Assessment, making significant progress on the path towards certification.

With this advancement, the project has received validation that its operations meet the standards and criteria required for its developmental stage, paving the way for a future official certification that will enable the issuance of permanent carbon removal credits (CORCs).

Through independent validation, the preliminary assessment confirmed that the project design, monitoring approach, and lifecycle assessment are structured in accordance with one of the leading market standards for engineered carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

The Kirkenær BECCS project represents Carbon Centric’s first initiative dedicated to permanent geological CO2 removal.

As part of this project, a carbon capture facility will be installed at Solør Bioenergi’s existing combined heat and power (CHP) plant, located about 130 km north of Oslo.

The existing CHP plant incinerates treated wood waste and provides district heating, using end-of-life wood materials, including railway sleepers and demolition wood. The generated heating is then distributed to municipal buildings, commercial customers, and local industry clients.

At this location, Carbon Centric’s CO2 capture system will be used to treat flue gas from the largest boiler of the CHP plant, capturing approximately 32,000 tonnes of biogenic carbon dioxide annually.

The captured CO2 will be processed with amine technology to ensure it meets purity requirements before it gets transported to a permanent geological storage site by a licensed storage operator.

According to information shared by Carbon Centric, the BECCS Kirkenær Project is targeting a final investment decision (FID) in 2026. For the Norwegian company, the successful Puro.earth Preliminary Assessment comes soon after a secured long-term CDR agreement with DNV.

In a statement, Carbon Centric shares that these two milestones will help reduce project risk and strengthen the overall bankability and readiness of the project for final audit and implementation.
