Recent data shows that there is a growing investment trend in carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions, as the escalating climate crisis necessitates urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

While transitioning to renewable energy sources is crucial, many experts agree that carbon capture, storage, and transformation (CCST) is also essential to mitigate the worst effects of climate change.

This sentiment is reflected in the substantial funding that CCST startups have received. According to data from Crunchbase, in 2024 alone, these companies have secured nearly $1.2 billion in equity and debt financing, indicating a strong investor interest in this sector.

Twelve, a carbon transformation company, has been a major recipient of funding, raising a total of $645 million this year. The company’s technology converts captured carbon dioxide into valuable products like chemicals and fuels.

Other notable CCST startups include Svante, which specializes in carbon capture filters, and CarbonCapture, which focuses on direct air capture technology. These companies have also secured significant investments to support their growth and development.

The sale of carbon removal credits is a key revenue stream for many CCST startups. Companies like CarbonCapture have attracted high-profile customers, including Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft, which purchase carbon removal credits to offset their emissions.

As the climate crisis intensifies, the importance of CCST technologies is becoming increasingly recognized.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has emphasized the role of carbon capture and storage in achieving net-zero emissions, which will require significant investment in the nascent climate solution.

As CCST startups continue to scale, we can expect to see a rise in project financing alongside traditional venture capital investments. This trend aligns with the broader shift toward larger-scale cleantech projects.

Ultimately, the success of CCST startups will depend on their ability to scale their operations and make a meaningful contribution to addressing the climate crisis.

Whether they are primarily funded through debt or equity, their impact on the environment is what matters most.
