Edinburgh-based biochar company Carbogenics has secured $3 million in a recently closed investment and grant funding round that will serve to expand the firm’s international reach and accelerate tech development.
The funding round saw participation from Dangerous Ventures, Green Angel Ventures, Scottish Enterprise, Old College Capital, and the University of Edinburgh’s venture investment fund, while the grant funding was backed by Innovate UK, New Mexico Gas, and the New Mexico Government Economic Development Department.
With this financial injection, Carbogenics will boost manufacturing capacity in the United States while also expanding its currently centralized presence in the United Kingdom, creating new roles in these two markets.
Specifically, the funding will fuel the deployment of CreChar—a biochar product that transforms biomass residue into a carbon-negative solution, particularly within the biogas industry.
Advertised by the company as a biochar product with numerous applications in industry and agriculture, CreChar is designed to bring peak performance in processes such as anaerobic digestion and wastewater treatment, among others, where it serves to stabilize biological performance and regulate pH levels.
With its large surface area and unique chemical composition, this patented product can also contribute to a fertile growing environment for functional and process-enhancing microorganisms that digest organic waste.
CreChar can be used to increase the stability and efficiency of anaerobic digestion and wastewater treatment processes, which in turn can bring a 10% biogas production increase at anaerobic digestion plants from the same amount of feedstock or a maintained output using less feedstock.
In its biochar business expansion, Carbogenics will focus on regions such as New Mexico, where it will help convert agricultural and forestry residues into products that support the sealing of orphaned gas wells and the work of systems such as direct air capture (DAC), soil enhancement, and carbon sequestration projects.

In parallel with the expansion efforts, the company is also continuing its partnership with the Scottish Water on the Filachar project, which is working on developing sustainable sewage sludge management mechanisms.
Building on progress made in 2025, this partnership is looking to create CO2 removal solutions that reduce the environmental impact within the water industry.
