Pilot Energy has signed a joint development agreement with Capture6 to install Direct Air Capture (DAC) and water treatment capacities at its Mid West Clean Energy Project (MWCEP).

Under this collaborative effort, in 2025, Capture6 will begin demonstrations of its novel DAC and clean water technology at Pilot’s Arrowsmith site.

Leveraging a $6.5m Commonwealth Carbon Capture Technologies Program grant (CCTP), the two partnering companies will kick off a joint venture called Project Wallaby (80% Capture6, 20% Pilot).

Scheduled to unroll in four phases, this project will be coordinated with the MWCEP development.

Once the Phase 1 2025 demonstration has been wrapped up successfully, in 2026 the project will advance to Phase 1a, where it will focus on expanding operations to catalyze monetization through the sale of water, low-carbon chemicals, and high-purity CO2.

In Phase 2, slated for 2028/2029, project Wallaby will move on to full-scale deployment, managing approximately 2 gigaliters of water produced during CO2 storage operations, while simultaneously aiming to remove up to 80,000 tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide annually.

From 2030 onward, the project is expected to enter its final phase, where it hopes to increase its DAC capacity to 350,000 tonnes per year, clearing the way for even more carbon removal power in the future.

If the demonstration of Capture6’s technology is successful, this refinement could introduce potential water treatment net cost reductions from MWCEP future carbon storage operations, granting Pilot Energy a potential future revenue stream from carbon removal credits sales.

On behalf of Pilot Energy, Chairman Brad Lingo commented, “The world-leading technology Capture6 can bring to the MWCEP can materially reduce the cost and environmental impact of the MWCEP’s water handling system. It has also demonstrated the potential to generate revenue from the future sale of carbon removal credits and by-products, which may include hydrogen.”

Capture6’s co-founder and CEO, Ethan Cole, said the company is excited about the partnership, as they focus on decarbonization in Western Australia and addressing the water insecurity in the region.
