This week, water-positive carbon dioxide removal (CDR) company Capture6 announced that it has successfully raised $27.5M in Series A and project funding.

In a round led by Tetrad Corp., the company also received backing from Hyundai Motor Group’s ZER01NE Ventures, Energy Capital Ventures, Elemental Impact, Bridge Investment, Sopoong Ventures, Third Derivative, Stan and Jane Rodbell, and the Jacob S. Shapiro Foundation.

This significant financial influx will enable Capture6 to further develop its global network of projects centered around carbon removal and water recovery from waste brine.

Capture6 has created a streamlined, one-step direct air capture (DAC) approach that transforms waste brine into a solvent that mineralizes atmospheric carbon dioxide, offering a much more practical CO2 removal solution than conventional energy-intensive, multistep DAC solutions.

The novel system can be incorporated into existing industrial-scale water infrastructures and has the ability to recover freshwater from brine that would otherwise be wasted, generating green chemicals that are vital for water facilities.

According to Capture6, when deployed at desalination facilities, this technology can recover over 50% of freshwater from desalination waste brine that can be used for drinking or industrial purposes.

Capture6 CEO Ethan Cohen-Cole commented, “Climate change is creating water insecurity for much of the world’s population, driving up demand for freshwater worldwide, and exacerbating the root problem as current methods of water treatment are carbon intensive.”

“Our approach reduces waste streams from desalination and wastewater treatment while generating new water sources, lowering waste disposal costs, improving the efficiency of water production facilities, and decarbonizing projects simultaneously.”

Currently positioned in California and New Zealand, Capture6 has so far shared plans for four water positive carbon removal facilities across three continents.

Last year, the company also announced a pre-purchase of 1,000 tons of carbon removal for Shopify and Stripe, facilitated by the Frontier advance market commitment.

Looking ahead, Capture6 will utilize the recently secured funding to work on its global expansion, exploring opportunities for integrating its systems with industrial partners in the U.S., Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Australia, and the Middle East.
