Capture6, a leading water-positive carbon removal company, has recently announced a collaboration with K-Water and BKT to develop an innovative water management decarbonization plant in South Korea.
The planned facility is expected to be the world’s first fully integrated water management and carbon dioxide removal mechanism utilizing a seawater desalination plant.
The three partners have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), agreeing to combine forces and utilize the K-Water desalination facility along with the advanced technologies of Capture6 and BKT. The primary goals of this collaboration are to capture CO2, recover freshwater, minimize brine discharge, and extract green chemicals.
This collaboration comes at a critical time for the region, as K-Water is currently constructing the largest desalination facility in the country to supply water to heavy industries in the Daesan Industrial Complex nearby.
This complex accounts for a full 40% of South Korea’s petrochemical production and has been suffering from water scarcity due to severe droughts and reliance on external water resources.
The facility, located in an area surrounded by industrial plants producing large volumes of greenhouse gas emissions (17 MtCO2e/year), presents an excellent opportunity for Capture6 to utilize its Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology and point-source capture (CCS) to further decarbonize the region.
Capture6 utilizes saltwater to create its carbon removal solvent, making it an ideal partner for water treatment facilities like the one being developed by K-Water. This project will be part of Capture6’s Project Octopus, a two-phase project aiming to remove up to 500,000 metric tons of CO2 per year via a large-scale commercial plant.
By integrating Capture6’s technology into the water treatment process, the facility can not only remove carbon from the atmosphere but also increase its freshwater yields, contributing to both environmental and resource sustainability.
As concerns about climate change and water scarcity continue to grow in South Korea, the work of Capture6, BKT, and K-Water in this area is both timely and crucial for future well-being, not only on a local level but potentially also on a global scale.
