This week, direct ocean capture (DOC) company Captura announced the launch of its new global headquarters in Pasadena, California.
The 30,000-square-foot site will also serve as a manufacturing location for the company’s cutting edge electrodialysis technology.
By venturing into domestic tech production, Captura is establishing the first U.S.-based manufacturing facility for complete electrodialysis systems, from membrane fabrication to stack assembly.
The Pasadena site will be used as an expanded research and development capacity, hosting the company’s increasing team and setting the stage for the commercial deployment of the Captura’s innovative technology.
Captura has been making waves in the carbon removal industry with its direct ocean capture (DOC) system powered by novel technology spun out of Caltech.
The company utilizes an electrodialysis system that offers a performance tenfold higher than other commercially available alternatives. This system is able to operate with less energy than conventional solutions, resulting in lower investment costs.
This system is also central to Captura’s DOC approach, which extracts carbon dioxide directly from ocean water without using chemical additives or creating waste products in the process. The captured CO2 can then be permanently stored or repurposed into new products.
By collecting carbon dioxide from seawater, this process boosts the ocean’s capacity to continue absorbing atmospheric CO2, helping maintain the natural climate balance.
With its new domestic production capacity, Captura will power its own DOC carbon removal systems while also offering the solution to a number of other industries, including desalination, wastewater treatment, life sciences, critical mineral extraction and other electrochemical decarbonization approaches.
This milestone expansion will also allow Captura to further grow its team, creating new job opportunities for professionals skilled in engineering, manufacturing, and operations.
Captura CEO Steve Oldham commented that the Pasadena facility is a major step forward in scaling operations and accelerating commercial deployment.
He stated, “As the first U.S. manufacturing center for full electrodialysis systems, we’re creating local jobs, strengthening regional supply chains, and establishing domestic production capabilities for a high-demand electrochemical technology, reducing American dependence on foreign-made components.”
