CapChar, the UK company behind an innovative on-site biochar production mechanism, has successfully issued the first 8.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits as part of an agreement between architecture firm Bennetts Associates and Restord.
The carbon credits were generated by a company named Restord, who used the on-site technology developed by CapChar to produce biochar from agricultural biomass on a farm in Cornwall.
These carbon credits mark a milestone first portion of a prepurchase agreement signed between CapChar and Bennetts Associates that entails 50 tonnes of CDR credits.
For architectural firm Bennetts Associates, this CDR delivery represents progress in the company’s mission of reaching its net-zero targets, approved as science-based by the SBTi.
Their prepurchase deal with CapChar was the first-ever to be certified under CapChar’s innovative Biochar Carbon Code, released earlier this year in an effort to establish an integrity standard for carbon removal in the United Kingdom.
According to CapChar, by being priced at approximately $270 per tonne (£200), a cost that is significantly higher than the industry average, this prepurchase agreement signals a strong market interest in durable, high-quality carbon removal.
This delivery of UK-based biochar carbon credits also underlines a demand for “homemade” climate solutions by UK purchasers, where the project results directly impact and benefit local communities.
