In a new biochar market report, Supercritical points out that buyers are locking in larger carbon removal volumes earlier in the year, noting that 81% of the high-quality supply was committed by July 2026.

This data shows more determined buyer activity in 2026, with the specific percentage threshold reached three months earlier this year than in 2025.

By securing larger volumes throughout the year, buyers have left fewer volumes available on the spot biochar market in H2 2026.

In the publication, titled The biochar supply crunch: Market intelligence for H2 2026, Supercritical goes over what exactly is left on the market now, which supply is considered high-quality, and what the pricing landscape is for buyers entering the spot market in the second half of 2026.

The report notes that as the biochar market matures, larger buyers are moving from ad hoc spot purchases to structured, multi-year procurement.

Main takeaways from the Supercritical biochar report

One of the main biochar market takeaways from H1 2026 is that buyers purchased more carbon dioxide removal (CDR) volumes in the first half of this year than they did throughout all of 2025.

Excluding Microsoft, buyers purchased offtake volumes tenfold more during this time, going from 176,000 tonnes in H1 2025 to 1.81 million tonnes in H1 2026.

According to Supercritical’s market analysis findings, prices for spot purchases tend to rise in H2.

In that regard, the report states that credits that were sold at a price of $155 per tonne in July 2025 reached a price of $185 by November for the same project. This finding indicates that buyers who move earlier pay less and have more choice.

Biochar as a CDR pathway has delivered more than twice the volume of all other permanent CO2 removal methods combined and currently is the only method with a liquid spot market.

Supercritical shares that nearly half of the remaining high-quality biochar supply on the market is available exclusively through its marketplace, and active enterprise RFPs could claim 70% of unsold high-quality credits.
