BURN, in partnership with Climate Solutions, has secured approval from Gold Standard to begin piloting a digital monitoring system for biomass cookstoves, deemed as a significant step toward modernizing how clean cooking projects are measured and verified.
The companies will deploy their Digital Kitchen Performance Test, or dKPT, in Kwara State, Nigeria, where BURN intends to distribute roughly 1,000 ECOA Char stoves.
The project will track real-world household behavior using automated tools, including digital scales to capture fuel consumption, electronic sales platforms that replace manual record-keeping, and sensors installed on a subset of stoves that continuously monitor usage.
The data stream will be used to calculate emissions reductions in real time and support the issuance of CCP-labeled credits under Gold Standard rules.

The initiative is viewed as a milestone for a sector that has long relied on labor-intensive field surveys.
By converting key monitoring tasks to digital systems, the pilot is expected to improve precision, curb human error, and increase trust among credit buyers who are demanding stronger evidence of impact.
“This is good news for the clean cooking sector,” said Peter Scott, BURN’s chief executive. “It reflects BURN’s innovative approach and leadership in advancing how Kitchen Performance Tests are done.”
The dKPT tool can be paired with Gold Standard’s TPDDTEC Methodology Version 4.0, integrating digital data streams with established carbon accounting protocols.
Climate Solutions’ platform will provide open access to stove usage and fuel consumption data for project developers, auditors, standards bodies, and buyers.
