BURN, a leading African clean cookstove manufacturer and carbon project developer, has secured its first carbon credits eligible for use under the aviation sector’s global offsetting system, marking a milestone for both the company and compliance carbon markets.

Gold Standard confirmed that 180,867 credits generated by BURN’s clean cooking projects have been tagged as eligible for Phase 1 of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

The approval followed completion of all program requirements, including receipt of a host-country letter of authorization, issuance under an approved methodology, and coverage through a carbon insurance policy underwritten by OKA.

The credits are the first cookstove credits globally to receive a CORSIA tag through the insurance pathway, a structure designed to address risks such as policy reversals and double claiming.

The approach is emerging as a mechanism to strengthen confidence and unlock additional supply for compliance-grade carbon markets.

“Receiving our first CORSIA-tagged credits shows the integrity behind every credit we generate,” said Chris McKinney, Chief Commercial Officer at BURN.

The insurance-backed pathway ensures that the credits meet International Civil Aviation Organization requirements on permanence, additionality and environmental integrity.

It also positions insurance underwriting as a growing tool for managing revocation risk as carbon markets expand.

Gold Standard said the development demonstrates how projects can reach regulated markets while scaling social and environmental benefits.

“With our support to projects, such as our insurance pathway under CORSIA, Gold Standard is helping projects reach new markets and scale impact for people and nature,” said Margaret Kim, Gold Standard’s CEO.

The issuance places BURN among a small group of developers able to supply credits suitable for use under international aviation compliance obligations.

The company said it plans to expand the use of insurance-backed integrity mechanisms across its broader portfolio.
