Burckhardt Compression, a global leader in reciprocating compressor technology, has secured a milestone order to supply advanced compression solutions for the first industrial-scale liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier.
The vessel will be deployed in support of the Northern Lights carbon capture and storage (CCS) project, marking a critical evolutionary step in scaling carbon management from pilot applications to full industrial utility.
Purpose-built LCO2 carriers are emerging as a pivotal enabler for global CCS scale-up. By transporting carbon dioxide in liquefied form, these vessels facilitate the flexible, safe, and efficient movement of large emission volumes between industrial source points and permanent offshore storage locations.
This mobile infrastructure provides an alternative to fixed pipelines, allowing European industries to navigate cross-border decarbonization challenges seamlessly.
Adapting Proven Engineering for Marine Carbon Logistics
To meet the demanding requirements of maritime carbon transport, Burckhardt Compression will deploy its specialized K-Laby compressors.
Known for high operational flexibility and robust energy efficiency, this technology has been specifically adapted from liquefied gas applications to withstand the unique pressures of emerging low-carbon value chains.
The standardized, larger-scale design of this new vessel class will help establish a blueprint for future centralized carbon shipping hubs.

The Northern Lights initiative stands as the world’s first operational cross-border LCO2 transport and storage network, offering carbon management “as a service.”
Captured industrial emissions are shipped directly to an onshore terminal in Øygarden, Norway, before being injected and securely stored beneath the North Sea. Following its successful operational launch in 2025, the project is rapidly expanding its infrastructure capacity to accommodate mounting demand from heavy industry across Europe.
By integrating its machinery into this premier generation of industrial LCO2 carriers, Burckhardt Compression reinforces its alignment with the global energy transition. The partnership translates high-level climate ambition into viable, long-term infrastructure, giving hard-to-abate sectors a concrete asset to meet stringent net-zero requirements.
