Brineworks has announced the launch of a new direct air capture (DAC) demonstration plant, hosted within the Amsterdam Science Park campus.

Designed to capture up to 100 tonnes of CO2 annually, the plant is Brineworks’ first operational demonstration at this scale and is a key step in the company’s journey towards commercial readiness.

According to Brineworks, the system’s early data is already indicating an ability to capture atmospheric CO2 at below $100 per tonne. This breakthrough, in turn, can unlock a new generation of affordable DAC-sourced CO2 to power the production of clean fuels.

The demo plant launch will bring together investors, industry partners, and academic researchers to tour the operational plant and hear from Brineworks’ co-founders: Gudfinnur Sveinsson, a Columbia University graduate with a background in climate policy and innovation, and Dr Joseph Perryman, a PhD electrochemist with postdoctoral research at Stanford University and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

Brineworks’ DAC system includes an electrolyzer technology that operates flexibly with intermittent renewable power. The system captures CO2 emissions directly from the air while also co-producing green hydrogen, delivering both of the essential feedstocks for sustainable aviation fuels (eSAF) and e-methanol for shipping.

Co-founder and CTO Dr Joseph Perryman explained, “The key differentiator of this demonstration is that it proves we can produce both of the key feedstocks for e-fuels at the same time and at scale. We’re literally generating tonnes of clean CO2 and green hydrogen using a single electrochemical system, and we’re already confirming our cost projections while we do it.”

On a global level, the aviation industry accounts for 2.5% of CO2 emissions, while shipping contributes to around 2%. Both of these sectors urgently need scalable and low-cost sustainable alternatives, and Brineworks’ technology is engineered to supply RFNBO-compliant CO2 and green H2 at market-leading costs.

Brineworks co-founder and CEO Gudfinnur Sveinsson stated, “The early numbers are confirming what we set out to prove: that Direct Air Capture will get affordable enough to actually deploy at the scale the world needs.”

To date, the company has raised almost $11M across financing rounds and European grants and is working on launching a next funding round. Currently, Brineworks is in discussions with partners in the e-fuel sector, with its next phase of development focused on a commercial-scale pilot.
