Bregal Sphere, part of Bregal Investments, has entered into a strategic partnership with nature restoration company Imperative, aiming to allocate up to $500 million into a pipeline of global ecosystem restoration projects.

Under the partnership, Bregal Sphere has obtained a right of first refusal to deploy the said amount of funds across Imperative’s future projects, with the intention of making its first project commitment within the first half of 2026.

With this agreement, Imperative’s project funding framework arrangements now reach an eye-catching total of $1.25 billion of capital earmarked for deployment into its projects.

Imperative’s work is focused on developing next-gen carbon projects that deliver large-scale, positive environmental, biodiversity, and social results.

The company’s flagship ecosystem restoration project in South Africa, known as Beka Emva, aims to restore the degraded subtropical thicket biome in this region, using a pioneer species called Portulacaria afra (spekboom).

Besides this ambitious initiative, Imperative is also developing an expansive global network of reforestation and mangrove restoration projects in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

With the support secured from Bregal Sphere, Imperative will be able to accelerate the growth of its operations, focusing on scaling the scope of its platform.

Imperative’s work aligns perfectly with Bregal Sphere’s mission of supporting developers on their journey of delivering large-scale carbon removal projects that also generate nature, climate, and social benefits alongside financial returns.

For this particular strategic partnership, Bregal Sphere was advised by Latham & Watkins LLP and Alvarez & Marsal.

Commenting on the agreement, Agustin Silvani, Managing Partner at Bregal Sphere, stated, “This partnership reflects our conviction that high-integrity, landscape-scale restoration can deliver meaningful environmental impact alongside long-term value. Imperative’s operational expertise and disciplined approach make them a strong partner for Bregal Sphere as we scale investment into nature restoration globally.”

On behalf of Imperative, CEO Scobie Mackay said, “Bregal Sphere brings mission-aligned, long-term capital, deep institutional experience, and market-leading impact thinking that directly supports our ambition to build a global portfolio of best-in-class, large-scale ecosystem restoration projects. Their partnership strengthens our ability to accelerate the execution of our pipeline and further realize the scale and impact potential of Beka Emva and our other projects.”
